LA-1 Slamboree

The Lafayette Kayak Fishing Club‘s largest tournament of the year may be my favorite to participate in. The LA-1 Slamboree takes place down Louisiana Highway 1, with boundries from Golden Meadow to Grand Isle. I don’t fish this area very often, which left me at a little bit of a disadvantage.

For weeks leading up to the tournament, I was unsure whether I’d be able to participate in it and once I knew I would, I began scouting for a location online. I was hoping to find an area that most other people wouldn’t be present, that’s not extremely easy to do down LA-1. There’s lots of accessible water, but a lot of it is private. The Friday before was beautiful and I did a little pre-fishing, something I don’t get to do a lot. Unfortunately, the only action I saw that day was a big red blowing up on a topwater plug but failing to hook-up.

That night, I stayed in Leeville at Topwater Marina. It was great getting to hang out with friends and talk fishing and life. Karl joined us late that night, and he and I talked about where we should put-in.

The next morning, we were up and out the door by 4:30. We made it to our launch to find only one other kayaker. Long story short, we fished pretty hard, fighting wind, and more wind, until a little after noon. We caught squat. We decided to head back to the marina and get cleaned up.

At the weigh-in, there was talk of it being a hard day with some, and others had great days. Maybe they were just gloating? Several really nice trout were caught, and a few nice reds. My buddy, Stephen, caught a doormat flounder.

I didn’t go home empty-handed either. I ended up winning a prize pack from Buggs Lures, which is a great and practical door prize for me… great sight-fishing jigs! Karl ended up with a fantastic door prize and I was so happy he won it… a Duce Rod ($200 value)!

Even though our luck in the tourney wasn’t great, we still had a great time. The Lafayette Kayak Fishing Club is full of some of the nicest guys around and they know how to put on a tournament!
